Reaching the Stars – New title out March 9th – poems about Extraordinary women and girls. (With Liz Brownlee and Michaela Morgan.)
In October of 2016, Jan Dean came to Dallington School, a British school in Madrid. Her experience was clear to see, as she was able to apply a range of strategies to develop vocabulary within young children who had English as an additional language and to help them understand the sounds and structures of poetry. The teacher workshop that she led after her session with the students is still one of the main highlights of the academic year for teachers.
Jan explained that when forming a poem, students and teachers need to imagine they are creating 'their own little world'. Unlike stories that need ideas to flow with a clear structure, a poem is a stepping stone from one idea to another idea. The day was a huge success and we are truly thankful for the support and guidance she gave to everyone.” I believe this sums up very well what Jan brings to schools. Joy and craft.
Jan Dean, in her role of NPD Ambassador, ran a project for the Education Office of Exeter Cathedral. She visited schools and ran workshops in the cathedral leading to an exhibition of poems in the Chapter House. She was lively and engaging and worked well with both children and staff, coping with last minute delays and changes without difficulty. Everyone enjoyed this project and produced lovely poems.
I met Jan four years ago when she came to my school in Suffolk. She held poetry workshops with the children from classes ranging from Reception to Year 2. They loved her! She is enthusiastic and bright with all the age groups and they made up animal poems that were descriptive and fun. We also had an assembly in which she read out some of her poems - my favourite was 'Bog snorkelling'.
Because the children enjoyed Jan's visit so much, last year, I invited Jan to my new school to do more workshops with different children! And would love to have her back again. Jenifer
