Storytellings, illustration and writing workshops, talks, lectures, conference speaking
Storytelling (4 – 7 yrs):
My storytellings are always lively, noisy and great fun!
Given time, I read 2 different stories. I create funny animal pictures on the flipchart for the children to guess, we sing songs linked to the theme and are generally rather silly. Midway, we break for the children to create their own illustration of something related to the stories.
Illustration workshop with short talk ( 7yrs – adult):
I talk about my work and explain how an illustrator, author and publisher work together to create a picture book. I bring original artwork, sketched roughs and character development sketches, to show how the illustrations evolve and analyse one of the books.
Students then create illustrations of their own. This practical element varies, but involves me sharing tips on some of the following: characterisation, movement and body language, creating humour, communicating thoughts and emotions, developing settings and backgrounds etc.
Creative writing workshop with short talk (7 – 10 yrs):
I explain how I write and illustrate picture books, showing a first-draft manuscript, created as a combination of sketches and text. I then use the children’s natural love of drawing to help them create interesting characters and to weave stories around narrative-driven illustrations. Each child writes the start of their individual story and I show them how to create a dynamic beginning through the use of dialogue.
1: How a Picture Book is Created (7yrs - adult): Humorous but packed with information on how a picture book is conceived & produced, including writing, character development, illustration, design and foreign sales. Ideal for whole school intro to a workshop day.
2: A life in Pictures (10yrs – adult):
How I got to where I am now, from textile design, through greetings cards and editorial illustration, finally settling into children’s publishing. I share the ups and downs of my career and show how I use sketchbooks to keep a love of drawing fresh and alive, 25 years after turning it into a job.
3: Sketchbooks Rule! (10yrs – adult):
Inspirational talk, guaranteed to get everyone drawing! What to sketch, how, where & with what - I share all my hot tips. I show on-location sketches created all over the world and explain how everything is a sketch-in-waiting and why you shouldn’t be afraid to draw in public.

"Thank you for your fantastic contribution to our Learning 2 Learn Day. I have had lots of excellent feedback - everyone really enjoyed it. Like last year, the drawings produced were exceptional and everyone was buzzing with confidence. One or two pupils who felt they couldn't draw were so thrilled with their pieces - it was worth it for their smiles alone!"
South Wigston High School & Arts College: March 2012
"Thank you so much Lynne for the wonderful illustration session you did with Year 3. All the children were amazed at their own ability to draw after your inspiring tuition and they haven't stopped drawing yet! Your enthusiasm is catching and we now have several children who wish to be an author or an illustrator!"

All pupils and staff were spell-bound by Lynne's amazing skill and lively, witty and entertaining personality. What a perfect celebration of world Book Week! Youth Library Group day-school lecture, Huddersfield Nov 2011
"What a fantastic session Lynne delivered for us! She kept the groups at the two libraries enthralled, despite the disparate ages of the children, from toddlers to teens and even the parents. The children loved the storytelling and 'book-talking' but particularly loved the hands-on drawing session. I would highly recommend Lynne to any library or school.
