Type of Artist:
Talks, readings, activity sessions, creative writing teaching.
I offer author talks (see 'Session Length' below) and creative writing workshops.
The aim of creative writing workshops is to inspire young writers and boost creative writing skills. They run in a group-based setting (usually 30-60 children), take up to 60 minutes and can be tailored to different ability levels.
Creative writing workshops can be booked as a standalone session or combined with an author talk.
8 – 13 year olds
No maximum number of pupils and staff (the more, the merrier!), provided an adequate amount of teachers and AV equipment is available.
Max 2 per day; 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon.
Appearances usually consist of a 45-minute interactive assembly/talk, followed by a 5-minute reading from one of my books, 10-minute Q&A session and 15-minute book signing.
I’m based in Nottingham but happy to travel anywhere in the UK if budget and logistics permit.
I travel by car to most events (45p per mile) but trains are also an option (standard train rate).

“Dan Walker – The Fundamentals: Travelled a significant distance to our event. Arrived on time, fully prepared and well organised. The Important Stuff: Enthused and encouraged the group. Fielded questions and ideas very well and what is most important, the boys left wanting to read his book as soon as they could (one started before the group left) – it was a lovely event, which everyone enjoyed – I have ordered more stock of the book that the event was based around, and the second in the series. Brilliant.”
Sue Chambers, Schools Events Co-ordinator, Waterstones Finchley Road O2
"We were lucky enough to host visits to two local primary schools where Dan spoke to years 5 and 6. The children were engaged throughout as Dan talked about his journey to becoming a published author and the inspiration for his stories. We had lovely feedback from staff and children at both schools who enjoyed the talk and appreciated the time that Dan spent chatting as he signed books for the children."
Louise Haines, The Bookcase Bookshop
"Dan gave an entertaining and interactive talk to our Year 7 students who enjoyed hearing about his journey towards becoming a published author. Dan relates well to young people, and engages with individuals about their interests. He is an inspiration!"
Jane Haywood, The Kimberley School
“Dan's performance was extremely inspiring. He prepared and presented the session to a high standard and the children were very engaged. It was useful for them to understand the journey and process of becoming a writer and how important it is to pursue your heart's desire."
Sianna Salmon, Year 6 Teacher, Coppice Primary School
Dan’s events are vibrant and inspiring. He keeps the students’ attention and fires their imaginations! Dan talks about his writing journey in a fun way and explains how video games have influenced his writing, which is really encouraging for reluctant readers. Dan has worked with young people for many years and is a confident and engaging performer. He is a lovely person too and one of my favourite authors to work with; we always recommend him to schools looking for lively author events.
