Based on the characters and plots from the Guardians of the New Moon chapter book series, young readers will explore East Asian legends, discover their lunar zodiac animal, and bring their magical creature to life through drawing and writing activities. Themes include empathy, celebrating differences, being your authentic self, dreaming big, and creativity.
Workshops can be customised to focus on the following elements:
- Magical Map Making – Creating maps of your lunar animal’s magical adventures and populating them with legendary locations and creatures
- Lunar New Year – A holiday-themed workshop in January/February to coincide with the lunar new year involving creative activities and learning about holiday traditions
- Mid-Autumn Moon Festival – A holiday-themed workshop in September/October to coincide with this harvest festival involving creative activities and learning about holiday traditions
- The Animal Within – Imagining your lunar animal’s unique qualities (magical and otherwise), what they love, and their dreams with drawing and writing activities
- Writing Magical Adventures – A creative writing-focused workshop to write stories around your lunar animal and their magical adventures
All workshops will explore East Asian myths and legends, encourage young readers to embrace differences, and promote storytelling and creativity. There will be time for Q&A in every session, as well as a reading if desired.

The workshops can be tailored for a group of 30 sitting around tables in a classroom or in an auditorium with 100+ students.

The workshops will also cover how I became a writer and where to find inspiration with storytelling prompts for students. They’ll also introduce East Asian magical creatures and deities, explain the difference between the lunar and solar calendars, and encourage audience members to use their imaginations.
