My Second Life
Faye Bird came to Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls in Ealing in September. She gave an assembly for a whole year group (Year 9) and delivered a workshop for a small group of Year 9 students after that on her recently published novel "My Second Life". The assembly was inspiring; as Faye read from her novel the students were spellbound by the passage and by the fact they were hearing the author herself read it.
The well-considered workshop was fabulous; the students were bursting with ideas and motivation to write, which continued after the workshop ended. Overall it was an excellent and memorable experience for our students. I would thoroughly recommend it to any secondary school."
Ms K Johnson (Deputy Head)
Our s2 pupils were genuinely inspired by Faye Bird’s visit to our school in August 2014. Faye read an extract from her novel My Second Life, which my class clearly found extremely intriguing and compelling, as the majority went on to read the book and are still discussing it several months later! Her presentation provided a fascinating and honest insight into the world of writing and publishing, and her delivery was warm and engaging. Her enthusiasm was infectious, meaning our pupils left eager start writing. Faye also kindly allowed some of them to interview her for the publication Teen Titles, and they found her to be approachable, entertaining and very interesting to talk to.
Kirsty McGrory (Teacher of English)
We were delighted that Faye Bird was able to come to the Strathearn Community Campus to speak to our S3 pupils as part of the Scottish Book Festival, 2014. It is always inspiring for pupils to hear from live authors. It helps to generate an enthusiasm for reading and writing and it helps to support our cultural strategy by giving young people a creative learning experience. Faye engaged well with her audience and the content of her debut novel My Second Life fitted in well with their study of reincarnation the previous term. Faye is highly personable and it was a pleasure for us all to meet her.
