The Apprentice Witch
A Witch Alone
A Witch come True
James Nicol, author of The Apprentice Witch, came to St Helens to do his first live author visit to a library service. While he was with us, James did 3 sessions to full audiences of over 50 children.
When James came to us, The Apprentice Witch had not yet been published and the children had access to only 2 chapters on line. Nevertheless, they were spellbound by James’s highly entertaining talk which was funny, witty and very interactive. A particular feature was his involvement of their teachers, who were dressed up as witches before their eyes, as the children guessed what would be essential in a witch’s toolkit. This caused great hilarity amongst the children, who visibly relaxed and engaged as the session continued.
James has a wonderful easy manner and knows exactly how to appeal to children, a skill not given to all. The children were clearly enthused and I would recommend James to deliver his talk to children of all ages. Although primarily aimed at primary school, there would be material from this novel that James could use with early years in secondary schools and I am sure that he would be just as entertaining and successful there.
Sue Williamson, Head of Library Services, St Helens
‘James was awesome, his presentation and interaction with the children was spot on. Well thought through and well crafted. Probably one of the best presentations that I have seen. Much like his book which I thoroughly enjoyed and will recommend over the summer.’
Clair Goodhead, Heffers
‘If you ever get the chance to meet James, please don’t pass it up. His energy and enthusiasm about books (not just his own, as James is also a librarian and former bookseller) is infectious. Beware though teachers, as you will not be passive audience members if James flies by your school!’
Chicken & Frog Bookshop
‘The children found James Nicol very entertaining and the event very enjoyable. They found it particularly interesting to learn about the whole publishing process from start to finish and how even successful writers need to edit and improve their work. We would highly recommend one of his talks to other schools.’
