Type of Artist:
Talks, assemblies, readings & workshops.
I offer assembly-style talks for larger groups of children (whole school assemblies no problem!) as well as classroom-based workshops, or a combination of both. In my talks I chat about how and why I became a children’s author; we dip into my author tool kit; there’s a reading from one of my books; I include an interactive element; and there’s always time for a Q&A. Workshops might focus on creating cracking characters, sensational story settings or powerful plots.
My books are for ages 7+ and 9+. I can offer talks and workshops for specific year groups in KS2, P3-7 in Scotland, or for a range of year groups, as required.
I am equally comfortable talking to entire primary schools, including infants, and can tailor a talk accordingly.
Up to 30 for a classroom workshop; no limit for assembly talk.
Max 3: a talk plus 2 workshops; 3 workshops; any combination.
45-60 mins for talks & workshops, plus signing time afterwards.
Anywhere in central belt of Scotland or up to 2 hour’s drive from Edinburgh area; UK-wide if overnight expenses are met.
Train; bus; or car @ 45p per mile.

“I have booked Justin multiple times over the last 4 years not just for Wee Write but for other library events as well. Justin is fantastically engaging with the children. He holds their attention and his sessions are full of fun interactive activities. Feedback from schools and families are always positive and I would jump at the chance to book Justin again. In fact I probably will!”.
Fiona Haddow, Reader Development & Literacies Officer, Glasgow Life Libraries.
“You don't just watch a Justin event, you wholly participate! I participated in his EIBF event this year. He's funny, energetic and managed to engage all the children, and adults, with encouragement and humour. Justin has an enthusiasm which is infectious. You know immediately that he has experience of, and a delight in, working with children. He runs a total joy of an event where everyone will learn something (perhaps of a seaweedy nature) and I have no hesitation in recommending him for Authors Aloud.”
Suzanne Kennedy, Sales and Marketing Director, Floris Books
“I would highly recommend Justin to any school. When Justin visited our school in March 2023, our children responded enthusiastically to him, he was able to maintain the interest of our whole school from P1 to P7 for a whole school assembly, no mean feat! Our P5 children loved the way he used humour in his writing workshop and even our reluctant writers were energised to produce fantastic results. Communication with Justin was so easy and he was very responsive to the needs of our children. Our children are already asking when we can arrange for him to visit again!”
Jenni Athey, Depute Headteacher, Birkhill Primary School, Angus.
As well as lots of experience with school visits, library sessions and book festivals, Justin has worked as a classroom assistant in a primary school. This has given him an invaluable insight into the running of a school day, the importance of knowing when the breaktime bell will ring, and the benefit of being ready to improvise should the need arise!
