“Maisie’s visit to our school was full of excitement! Maisie connected with our students through stories about her favourite childhood books, how she became an author and the difficulties of feeling a sense of belonging as a British Chinese child living in the UK. This theme of belonging and the need for diverse characters in children’s books especially resonated with our students. Maisie invited some lucky students up to the stage to draw ‘East Meets West’ creatures and objects on the big whiteboard, just like Danny Chung. Our students were eager to ask Maisie questions about her inspirations and other books.
In the writing workshops, Maisie encouraged the students to show their cultural diversity through the
characters and fantasy creatures in their stories. The students loved designing and drawing their own
characters for stories, with Maisie’s expert guidance.
Maisie’s book signing was also a massive hit, with students eager to get their books signed and ask Maisie more questions. Maisie also gave insightful answers to our student newspaper reporters’ questions.”

“Maisie was a delight from start to finish – she really connected with our cohort and even added in a part to the presentation (while she was mid flow) to allow out minority students to feel seen. During the workshop Maisie really created a fun buzz and connected with the students over their work.”

“As part of our celebrations for World Book Day, we were very fortunate to have Maisie Chan visit our school. Many of our students had already read Danny Chung Does Not Do Maths, and so the excitement was palpable. As an international school, we have children from all over the world and we were particularly thrilled to welcome Maisie as an advocate for diversity in children’s literature.
Maisie worked with all of the children in the Lower School, from 4- to 11-year-olds and all of them engaged enthusiastically in her workshops. They loved finding out about her own reading journey, the special people that inspired the characters in her books and exploring these characters in more depth. They listened attentively as she read excerpts from the Tiger Warrior series, Danny Chung Does Not Do Maths and Keep Dancing, Lizzie Chu. The children delighted in creating their own characters and left her workshops excited and enthused about reading. It was a brilliant start to our World Book Day celebrations.”
