Nigel Smith has been a journalist, busker, TV comedy producer and scriptwriter, winning an award for his BBC 4 radio comedy, VENT. More importantly, he has been - and still is - an embarrassing Dad. Much like Nathalia Buttface, his three children are continually mortified by his ill-advised trousers, comedic hats, low-quality jokes, poorly chosen motor vehicles, unique sense of direction and unfortunate ukulele playing.

The NATHALIA BUTTFACE series
Nigel first visited the Wakefield area in May 2016 after his book “Nathalia Buttface and the Most Embarrassing Dad in the World” was shortlisted for a local schools annual book award.
Originally booked to visit three schools Nigel very kindly went to a fourth school at the last minute when the weather scuppered our plans.
His sessions were a mix of brief biography, reading extracts, dramatised reading of letters, children’s participation and questions and answers. Nigel was wonderful at encouraging the children to tell their own stories and got them and their teachers very involved.
He really listened to the children and definitely shared their sense of humour; they were enthralled and full of questions during and after the session had finished. It was quite a task to get Nigel away from each school! This was Nigel’s first visit to Wakefield but it will not be his last.
Wendy Mitchell, Wakefield Libraries
“All our children gave Nigel a big thumbs up……. they really enjoyed his visit and thought he was interesting and they love his books we sold out of them!“
Gawthorpe Community Academy
"The visit was fantastic for not only the Book Club, who had been reading Nigel's books, but also the rest of Year 5 who had heard so much about Nathalia Buttface! Nigel gave the children chance to relate to the books whilst sharing their stories about their embarrassing Dads, which provided great entertainment and giggles. The children had great fun!"
