Quote from Piers Torday on winning the Guardian Prize:
“I am so delighted to win the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize 2014 for The Dark Wild. In my acceptance speech I was proud to challenge the message from the Education Secretary recently that “studying arts subjects in schools holds you back in life.” If anything, as an English graduate and all arts A-level student, my award is testament to the contrary. Studying the arts, reading both for pleasure and further study, are not pursuits which hold you back in life, but ones which actively develop and change your life. That’s always what I say when I visit schools, and look forward to saying it to many more in the future.”
The Death of an Owl (2016, with Paul Torday, adult)
Piers was so relaxed and laid back he seemed to engage with our students easily and I am sure this had more impact than otherwise. Of the workshop, Sarah commented that English teacher who joined in the session was really impressed. It was a privilege to watch Piers work with the young people and its obvious that he has worked a great deal with schools. He was brilliant at giving a big presentation and creative writing workshop”"

Joan of Arc Primary School, Highbury
“Thank you so, so much for a wonderful evening on Wednesday. The boys were absolutely buzzing on Thursday morning: all age groups really enjoyed your talk and some of those who have books are already 100+ pages in (no word of a lie!). I really appreciate the genuine interest you took in our boys' opinions on reading and their own writing. You couldn't have been more encouraging or a better role model for our burgeoning writers. Just brilliant, thank you again!”

“Thank you again for visiting us yesterday, the students were clearly excited and I had several staff members approach me afterwards to tell me how great it was.”
