Type of Artist:
I visit primary schools and nurseries doing readings and running workshops.
The stories are very funny and the children have a great time. I have puppets, props and lots of costumes which I use in my Snoring Beauty Drama workshop.
Fractured fairytales are a speciality of mine. They work extremely well with the young and fit naturally with many aspects of the curriculum. The children enjoy the humorous twists in my stories and enjoy interacting with my puppets. I have a gorgeous Sweet Little Wolf, a beautiful Snoring Beauty who snores in a very unladylike way and Three Billy Goat marionettes that the children sometimes take for a walk! I have a lot of experience with all age ranges so what we do can be tailored to needs.
I have a lovely postcard writing workshop with a specially designed card and a newspaper writing session. I also have a fairytale lost property session!
3 – 9 is probably the core of what I do but this can be extended if need be
My ideal session would be a class of up to thirty but I have run sessions with more children where the space and help from staff is available
This depends on the length of each session, it’s possible to fit in several reading and puppet
sessions of half an hour to forty five minutes – drama and writing workshops require more time. On average I run 3 to 4 sessions in a day
Snoring Beauty Drama workshop (best for reception and year 1) - 45 minutes
Readings with puppets 30 – 40 minutes depending on the age of the children
Writing workshops – allow one hour
Up to two hour radius of London is preferable but I would travel further if travel and overnight expenses are met
Sometimes car but often train depending on location
CRB checked

We enjoy visits throughout the school year from all kinds of visitors: authors during Book Week and at other times of the year too, and also visits from specialists for our themed days, such as Hip Hop Day, Africa Day and India Day. We welcomed Rachael Mortimer into school to visit the Infants. Rachael is the author of several books for younger children such as: ‘Snoring Beauty’,
‘The Three Billy Goats Fluff’ and ‘Red Riding Hood and The Sweet Little Wolf’.
So you can see immediately her twist on traditional fairy tales theme, which enables her to run hands-on drama sessions based on the characters in the books. She began the morning working with Year 2, reading aloud from ‘Snoring Beauty’. She brought along a wonderful selection of props including a snoring princess with a specially designed snoring app to give full sound effects. The session then developed and the children were encouraged to write their own giant postcard based on ‘Red Riding Hood and the Sweet Little Wolf’.
In the afternoon Year 1 and Reception had their turn at listening to Rachael read from her books and then dress up in a wonderful variety of costumes which enabled them to take part in a re-enactment of the story. As you can imagine they were absolutely thrilled to be able to dress up and assume the characters so vividly described in the book. We most definitely have some aspiring thespians in our midst.
