The following tips should help you decide what you want from an event, what sort of things authors will do and how to go about organising one successfully. *We have used ‘author’ to include authors, illustrators, poets and storytellers.

Think about what you want from an author visit.
What do you want them to do? – Talks or workshops or a mixture of both.
Which age group do you want to benefit from a visit?
Make sure you have permission to use the performance space before booking.
Make sure finance is available to fund the event.
Involve senior management and other teachers.
Think about when you want the author to visit.
Allow enough time between booking and the event so the children can read the author’s books and create displays.
